503 Represent!
The definitive kaiju is stomping his way to the Pacific Northwest in IDW Publishing‘s GODZILLA vs. PORTLAND #1, which released Wednesday, March 11th. In honor of the release and Portland being featured in the special one-shot issue, Cosmic Monkey Comics is bringing some comic book heavyweights for a fun-filled, two-hour event this weekend!
Cosmic Monkey Comics is the largest and snazziest comic book store in Portland. They’re your destination for tens of thousands of new titles, trade paperbacks, back issues, manga, toys, card games, posters and supplies. And if they don’t have what you’re looking for, they’ll help you find it! Customer service, done right!
The Portland, OR, Local Comic Shop (LCS) continues to put out fun events at their store. This Saturday, March 14th, they will be hosting Eisner Award-winning comic artist Colleen Coover (Bandette, Small Favors, Banana Sunday) and Eisner, GLAAD, and Ringo award winning comic book writer and author Mark Russell (The Snagglepuss Chronicles, Not All Robots, Superman: Space Age) in celebration of the city’s inclusion as part of Godzilla’s U.S. tour. For GODZILLA vs. PORTLAND, Colleen writes, illustrates, and letters the story “GODZILLA VS. SASQUATCH,” while Mark pens the tale “UNDER SIEGE IN THE 503″ (which features artwork by Eryk Donovan & letters from Sandy Tanaka).

A signing like this is one that needs to be shouted from the rooftops and one we encourage everyone in and around the Portland area to converge upon this Saturday. To learn a bit more about the store hosting this can’t-miss gathering and the creators’ appearance, I spoke with America’s Sweetheart, Andy Johnson – the owner of Cosmic Monkey Comics in Portland, OR, and Justin Zimmerman, the owner of Bricker-Down Productions, the media director at Battle Quest Comics, and writer for his hit creation – THE 27 RUN.
Wanna hear about it? Here it goes…

With this week’s release from IDW Publishing – GODZILLA vs. PORTLAND #1 – Cosmic Monkey is preparing for an event at the store featuring some of the contributors to the one-shot issue. How did you put this signing appearance together with your guests?
(Andy Johnson, owner) Portland has an amazing amount of comic creators and publishers. Having Godzilla show up in Portland is a great opportunity for us to show off some of our super talented writers and artists. They have always been so supportive of doing local community events, and meeting up with their fans for signings, outreach and even educational opportunities. We’re excited to have the incredible Colleen Coover and Mark Russell with us on this one.
With Portland being the latest city chosen for IDW’s “Godzilla vs. America” series of one-shots, how significant is it to have the most famous kaiju take on Oregon’s largest city?
(Justin Zimmerman, social media coordinator) I’ve always said that Portland is the independent comic book capital of the country. You can’t throw a locally created Pip’s donut without hitting someone involved with comics somewhere in the noggin. To see how we fare against the OG Japanese kaiju in the realm of sequential art is pretty rad, especially as we have some seminal local talent involved. Just read on!
Final one is easy… what can you share about the details of the event and what can fans & attendees expect when they visit Cosmic Monkey Comics this Saturday?
Just like it says on the poster, friends! Saturday, March 14th, noon to 2pm, Cosmic Monkey Comics is excited to welcome GODZILLA VS. PORTLAND writer / artist Colleen Coover & writer Mark Russell for a special local signing!
You know and love Colleen because she’s the Eisner Award-winning comic book artist of Bandette. Her comics also include the adult title Small Favors and the all-ages Banana Sunday. She has been published by Dark Horse, Top Shelf, Marvel, and many others.
You know and love Mark from projects as varied as Wonder Twins, Second Coming, Flintstones, Snagglepuss, Fantastic Four, Red Sonja, Judge Dredd: Under Siege, Batman, Rumpus Room… and many more.
Yo! Why would you do anything else this Saturday? This is going to be EPIC!!! Meeting comic book creators, gettin’ sigs, photo ops, and livin’ that comic life!
BUT THAT’S NOT ALL!!!
Cosmic Monkey Comics is hosting another event one week later on Saturday, March 21st with writer Greg Rucka (The Old Guard) – a special signing appearance celebrating the release of BATWOMAN #1!
